In its May 2009 article The top 12 Ethical Hideaways, Harper's Bazaar named Blue Reef Cottages, "Best for watching the midnight sun." Hard to get to, but the magazine says it's worth the trip to enjoy these remote cottages offering spectacular beach views and gourmet food on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Each eco sensitive cottage comes with a sauna and Jacuzzi. "Glorious countryside," a great restaurant is a 10 minute-walk away. Good value, seven nights in a cottage (sleeps two) from 950 pounds.

Serious, no-joke "fitness" camp on a private estate in Galloway, Scotland, for women only. Military style--wake up call at 5:45, then you head to the lawn for an hour of circuits, rain or shine. Breakfast is a small pool of porridge, then you hop in a jeep to pursue activities such as fast-walking up mountains or cycling in stunning surroundings. "The resistance is kept low for fat-burning purposes, so don't worry if running isn't your thing", reports Harper's Bazaar in its 2009 Fitness Special. On average you'll burn 6,000 calories a day with only 2,000 consumed.

The FT's luxurious hotel pick on Gigha, "a Hebridean hideaway of yellow gorse, white sand and a thousand luminous places." . Eleven spacious rooms in a baronial manor house on 50 acres, with famed rhododendron gardens. "In Gigha you must make up your mind to move at its pace, to dance to its own particular rhythm or not at all. After a day or so, you may well find yourself wanting to do little else but sit on a rock and watch the sea and then you’ll know that you really are on God’s own island. Great place to decompress from a hectic life -- no pollution, no traffic, beautiful coastal setting in Scotland. Victorian mansion secluded on 30 acres with its own cove. Nothing really to do except take wind-whipped walks along the cliff-tops and think about outstanding, Michelin-starred Modern Scottish cuisine for dinner. Lots of couples, as you can imagine.
