"Perched on the border of the Dordogne region, on the edge of the peaceful, working village of Marthon, Chateau de la Couronne blends its 16th-century heritage with its owners’ contemporary-interiors know-how. In addition to whispers of 60s and 70s design savvy in its five suites, the witty and urbane boutique hotel features a private cinema, five acres of polished parkland, and three kick-back-and-relax salons." [Mr and Mrs Smith]

"Le Logis de Puygâty is a 15th-century manor that’s more regal than rustic, where farmers’ tools sit alongside crystal chandeliers and luxurious linen. Old troughs double up as sinks, hay racks act as headboards, and stable doors provide tabletops, all lovingly restored and re-interpreted by design-dons and owners, Pierre and Max..... Topped by the Loire valley, tailed by Bordeaux, Poitou-Charentes is the home of cognac, cooled by Atlantic breezes. This coast-meets-countryside region is the nation’s left kidney."  [Mr and Mrs Smith]

Cozy accommodations in Toulouse.  The FT writes, "Toulouse has everything going for it: a privileged position between the Pyrénées and the Mediterranean, a beautiful site along the Garonne and the Canal du Midi, a magnificent semi-pedestrian historical centre, an extraordinary musical tradition going back to the medieval troubadours.  It is also a gourmet’s paradise, the birthplace of cassoulet and of a famous sausage, the number one outlet for the region’s foie gras among other delights."  Les Loges de Saint-Sernin is a beautiful B&B  in Toulouse's historic centre run by Sylviane Tatin.
