Cool new (and safe) way to explore Egypt, reports DailyCandy after enjoying the virgin voyage of Doug Loftland's tour company, Egypt Bike and Sail, in 2010. Itineraries include nine-day bike, sailing tours with stops at Luxor, Edfu and the southern city, Aswan (the driest inhabited place in the world -- last rain was in 2006).  "Not a cyclephile? Don’t worry — rides are suited to your ability; groups are limited to five people per guide; and a support van stocked with food, water, and a medic (just in case) always trails along. You’ll rest easy every night aboard your home for the week: a gussied-up river cruiser with oversize cabins, queen-size beds, marble bathrooms, and two balconies overlooking the serene river." Okay, we hate to gossip BUT "Queen Paolo of Belgium was so entranced by Adrere Amellal that she called Queen Elizabeth from her mobile and word was passed to the Prince of Wales, who made a special detour to see it," reports Tatler in a three-page feature article.  This place raises the bar.  A "modern day Bedrock", no electricity, no phones, the staff resemble medieval monks.  At night, bowls of hot ash under the dining table keep you warm. All of the food is organic. Eight-hour car journey from Cairo but who would care?  In its November 2008 review, "The top 10 desert breaks," Harper's Bazaar calls the eco resort's 11-room lodge Albabenshal "the mountain haven."  In June 2010, Vanity Fair put Adrere Amellal on "Travel:The Best List." Read all about Adrere Amellal and the surrounding area, Siwa, in the attached, January 2009 W Magazine article, Journey to Siwa.

In the April 2009 Tatler, Ashley Hicks raved about Dongola, a refurbished, "super-smart" private boat (a dahabiyah built in 1835) for touring the Nile. Hicks writes,  "Sailing up the Nile from Esna to Aswan was extraordinary...We stopped at the oddest places, seemingly just anywhere [to look at monuments away from the tourist action]." Apart from its beauty ['crisp white' unlike the popular 'fake, Victoriana-clad' boats], the joy of the boat lies in its small size -- one big cabin, three small ones, a large saloon and a huge open deck.  Ideal for a small family...."

Harper's Bazaar, Wallpaper and Town & Country all suggest touring Egypt on the Oberoi's brand new "chic" cruiser, Oberoi Zahra, which just has 27 suites. Amenities include spacious bedrooms and four massage suites on board. "If you only take one cruise down the Nile, let it be this one." [Bazaar] Tatler calls it the "hottest thing to hit the Nile." Read all about it in the attached Town & Country article. For tips on what to see when cruising the Nile, check out the attached Financial Times article.

In the attached article Cruising the Nile, the Financial Times writes, " Luxor’s Winter Palace Hotel is magnificent, and it’s not hard to picture Howard Carter in 1923 standing on its steps overlooking the Corniche, and telling the gathered pressmen about his discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb."   For dining in Luxor, the FT suggests "a good, small new restaurant called Casablanca on Al Roda Al Sharifa Street."

Harper's Bazaar calls Inmo Divers Home, "the ultimate Red Sea scuba hangout, a charming alternative to the expensive international resorts along this coast." Located in quiet Dahab, north of Sharm el-Sheikh, this "elegant" Arabic-style hotel boasts white doomed roofs and an acclaimed dive school, perfect for families. "Children love the man-made cave and waterfall, the parrots and the tortoises." "Horse-back riding on the beach at sunset is breathtaking."  Good value, rooms less than 40 Euro (Families should check out the larger terrace room with sea views.)
+ VOGUE
In April 2008, Vogue announced the launch of Atelier Egypt's Nile cruises on two restored, 19th century dahabiehs, one of which belonged to a sultan. Sailing from Luxor to Aswan, each boat is handsomely outfitted (air-conditioning, crisp cotton bedding, ensuite bathrooms and showers) and comes with Egyptologists on board. Since the boats are relatively small (8 to 18 passengers), they can stop at villages and temples off the tourist path. "At night, candlelit dinners on the kilim-covered deck bring back the romance of nineteenth century travel. " [Vogue] From $2,650 for an eight-day cruise.

W Magazine wrote a 3 page feature article about a new way to sail down the Nile.  It seems that two major fashion designers have recently hosted guests on old style dahabiyas, updated versions of the two-masted, flat hulled vessels that ferried Gustave Flaubert and Thomas Cook during the 19th century.
+ BRITISH HARPERS BAZAAR
Rave reviews for this palm-fringed resort with "faultless" service and a fine spa.  Harper's Bazaar wrote an article saying that Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh was the best spot for beginner scuba diving.
