New luxury resort in Dubai, 45 minutes from the airport, comprising 101 expansive villas with private pools, a hydrotherapy spa, nature reserve, and beach club (although the beach is 20 minutes away). Banyan Tree Al Wadi also boasts 31 Bedouin-style tented villas, about which the FT remarks, "Purists take note: this is Bedouin styling a la mode, complete with plasma screen TV, wi-fi, air-con, mini-bar et al."

In November 2008, Harper's Bazaar designated Desert Palm "Hotel of the month." From $360 a night.

In Elle, actress and Givenchy spokesman Liv Tyler calls the spa at this posh Dubai resort "amazing."  Considered the most stylish resort on Jumeirah Beach, One&Only Royal Mirage comprises three equally distinctive properties, the original hotel - The Palace - and now the Arabian Court and the Residence and Spa.   Three private and secluded villas, 18 suites and 32 deluxe rooms, all sea facing with a balcony or terrace.   Bazaar remarks, "First-timers will be blissed-out and reassured by the cocooning luxury of the hamman in this slick, luxurious resort."

Posh resort in a traditional Arab fort-like setting, 30 minutes from Dubai. "Cut off from the world but also easily accessible from Dubai.... the hotel offers a fantasy Arabian experience, writes Harper's Bazaar about Jumeirah Bab Al Shams.  Excellent open air restaurant. Good spot for couples to escape a hectic life.

Bazaar calls it "the perfect antidote to the outrageous bling in Dubai."  Gallery, vegetarian restaurant and 8-room guest house, located in a quiet area of old Dubai.  (In December, the average temperature of Dubai is 26 C)
