"Best for a novel-writing retreat," says Harper's Bazaar about Sea Cliff Cottages on nature-rich Dominica in its March 2009 article on luxe-for-less Caribbean destinations. Accommodations consist of a cluster of self-catering cottages, ranging from one to five bedrooms. Hodges Beach, a good swimming spot, is 20 minutes away. For meals, stroll down to the local fishing village Calibishie, which has several restaurants. "A perfect low-key Caribbean break." [Harper's Bazaar, March 2009] Seven nights, from about 390 pounds for a one-person cottage. Dominica is the least developed Caribbean island.

The FT writes, "Dominica is almost literally Eden...famous for the four Rs: rain, rivers, rainbows, and romance. If you like "bohemian, hippy-chic," the FT suggests this one-room place called Indigo, where Johnny Depp used to spend some time while shooting scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean at Titou Gorge.  Read more about Dominica in the attached FT article.

"Dominica is different from the rest of the Caribbean. Geologically, it's the youngest island in the region.... It is still bubbling in the kitchen, a high-peaked jungle-covered confection with water falls and just a few beaches of volcanic shades. Papillote is one of the "lovely, small, simple" properties recommended by the FT.   Rates from $110. Get the full scoop on Dominica in the attached FT article.

The FT writes about Dominica, "Culturally, it's an old-fashioned island. Most visitors are from other Caribbean nations and come to experience what the friendly islanders describe as 'the Caribbean as it used to be.'" Beau Rive is one of the two "lovely, small, simple" properties available on the island (there are no big international hotels). Rates from $123.
