The FT's travel editor Rahul Jacob says that Beit Rumman is the smallest boutique hotel in Damascus and also the "prettiest." Concerning Syria, he comments, " Syria is in vogue today because it offers citadels that look as if they might be a stage set for yet another film about the Crusades. The competing muezzins’ calls to prayer sound as if they were still the voice of Bilal, picked by the Prophet Muhammad for his mellifluous voice." Everybody says the Four Seasons is the place to stay in Damascus if you're not into the authentic scene. Amazing comfort, outstanding service. Its restaurant Al Halibi serves fine Syrian cuisine.

Charming, centrally-located 8 room hotel in Damascus, filled with Oriental carpets, impeccably-chosen traditional Syrian furniture and even frescoes and mosaics. Tatler writes, "the charm of it lies as much in this amazing hotel's antique tiled bathrooms and fountains scented with oranges as it does in her. Damascus is a secret...it is magical." The FT also recommended the hotel and in May 2008, it wrote a feature article about Syria as an up and coming holiday destination.

In the attached article Our Best Travel Moments of the 2009, DailyCandy writes, "Middle Eastern specialties are sublime at Naranj (at the Roman Arch on Straight Street), down the block from our hotel, Talisman Al Ameen." Another culinary tip for Damascus from DailyCandy. "And the pistachio-covered semolina ice cream is hand-pulled (and compulsive) at Bekdach in the Hamidiya Souk."

Huge, new theme park-like restaurant on the outskirts of Damascus. According to Guinness, Damascus Gate is the world's largest restaurant. The FT actually likes it: :"For such a large operation, the food is surprisingly tasty. Sampling a selection of dips and salads, I thought they tasted as good as most of the restaurants I have visited in Syria, with the exception of the delightful Narenj in the old city. But the Damascus Gate passed my hindbeh test, serving up a delicious version of one of my favourite dishes – spinach with fried onions.... It is certainly good, cheap fun. For about $15 a person, visitors can eat well and lap up the atmosphere of new Damascus, where bigger equals better." [FT] Check out this YouTube video. The Financial Times calls Khawali, "the best restaurant" in Damascus, adding that, "If Michelin were to publish a guide for Syria, Khawali would almost certainly merit a three-star rating." The setting is an "enchanting" courtyard in a 14th century building, off Straight Street, in the heart of old Damascus. The FT highlights a short, well-executed menu, "perfect" bread, no alcohol, complimentary desserts (as is the custom in many Arab restaurants). For more information, read the attached Financial Times review of Khawali by "mezze expert" Anissa Helou.
