"Sandwiched splendidly between the Pyrenees peaks and the Costa Brava’s cliffs and coves, Castell d’Empordà is a Catalan ruin turned romantic retreat."  [Mr and Mrs Smith]

"It's no wonder chic Europeans are jumping in their planes and traveling the 22 miles from Biarritz, 125 miles from Bordeaux, or 435 miles from Paris to spend a night in a little town in the Basque Country."  [Black Ink, Spring 2008, AMEX Centurion Members]  The first guesthouse in Michelin history to win a star. Hip transformation of an 18th century farmhouse, "a design addict's dream and a gourmand's sanctuary."

An accidental restaurant discovery by the Financial Times in the hearty wine-growing region of Catalonia. Touring the region in spring 2009, FT reporter Sue Style booked a room at La Siuranella, a six-room hostelry in the tiny clifftop village of Siurana. Its independent restaurant, Els Tallers, "is run by Pau Escriu, a Catalan, ... in the kitchen while his French partner, Anaïs Chauveau, is in the dining room. They met working at the celebrated restaurant El Racó de Can Fabes, near Barcelona, moved to northern Spain and then to the Loire." Rave reviews for Els Tallers' inspired, Catalan cuisine, which also happens to be good value.  "I wondered aloud how long such a talented and ambitious pair might stay in this tiny place, right off the beaten track." [FT]   Read more about Els Tallers in the attached Financial Times review.

Widely considered to be the best restaurant in Spain.  Hard to get a table, open from April to October. Expensive.  The FT comments, "One of many elements that distinguished this meal was the thoughtful and complementary way that one dish followed another. This was most obvious in the dish of lilywater with olives and petals, which looked like a Monet painting. This had a welcome cooling, calming effect after the lip-smacking richness of two strips of veal tendon served with a spoon of an equally rich bone marrow soup."  Read more about El Bulli in the attached FT review.

In the attached review, the FT writes, "El Celler de Can Roca has been an exceptional restaurant for the past decade, not least for its unlikely location in an unassuming suburb of Girona in north-east Spain." Run by three brothers, "the Rocas have continued to stay true to their Catalan roots and make extensive use also of partridge, pigs’ trotters, hake and pigeon." [FT]   Closed on Sunday and Monday.

Contemporary, Catalan-inspired haute cuisine served in this swanky remake of the Guitart Gran Hotel Monterrey's restaurant. Fresh ingredients from the local market are used to make dishes reflecting a hint of Indian and Moroccan history. Wallpaper says try the amazing arroz a banda.
