Where to stay - CABO SAN LUCAS
+ OUR FRIENDS
Canadian hipsters VitaminDaily.com write in June 2010. "At the Mexican-owned Marquis Los Cabos resort, they’re so serious about relaxation, they’ll bury your BlackBerry for you. While pondering the hotel’s impressive collection of art and sculpture, enjoying spacious private casitas and eavesdropping on the international clientele, you won’t miss it a bit." + VANITY FAIR, W MAGAZINE
"Unlike the [other] resorts, which line the Sea of Cortez side of Los Cabos, the $150 million Capella Pedregal sits atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific," reports W Magazine.  The location can only be reached via a tunnel being blasted through solid rock. In May 2010, Vanity Fair announced the launch of the Capella Pedregal's new salon by Julien Farel. "Beauty connoisseurs find comfort in the simple grandeur of Farel's private oasis, which extends customized treatments to every guest, offering in-room styling... all to be had while overlooking a stretch of rugged sandstone cliffs and glimmering sea." [Vanity Fair, Fanfare: Cabo's Capella, May 2010]
+ ELLE DECOR
Posh, new resort in Cabo San Lucas. "The five-acre waterfront property features 186 luxuriously appointed rooms that face the stunning Land's End rock formation. Highlights include a full-service salt-water spa and the B lounge."  [Elle Decor] I f you don't stay at the resort, you may want to check out the 12 Tribes, the resort's restaurant with an edgy menu, featuring wine-and beer pairing suggestions and cuisine inspired by the regions from which the 12 tribes of Israel migrated.  [Black Ink, AMEX Centurion Members, Fall 2008]
+ ELLE DECOR, TOWN AND COUNTRY, DAILYCANDY, W MAGAZINE
A DailyCandy spa pick.  Town & Country featured it in a mult-page photo shoot.  50 rooms and 6 luxury suites, situated on a low bluff at Punta Ballena, with spectacular views of the ocean. W says the first view of the property is discouraging (the look of a just-finished San Diego condo), "but once inside the open-air reception, the sunny vibe of Esperanza is notably younger and hipper than those of the other resorts." Urbane feel, polished concrete floors, soaring thatched roofs, private infinity Jacuzzis on the balcony, all of which Elle Decor praised.  Rave reviews for the seafood at the resort's open-air restaurant which sits on a bluff just above breaking waves. A fleet of convertibles is available for the dramatic hour drive up the Pacific to the dusty trading post of Todos Santos, known for Hotel California.

Sol Kerzner's creation here has become a total celeb-fest since he purchased the property in 2004.  It is the largest resort in the area, "but its Fantasy Island landscaping hides the expanse (guests are shuttled around in golf carts)," says W Magazine. The three restaurants in-house include the "terrifyingly expensive" C, by star chef Charles Trotter. Key amenities include a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, a quiet cove beach (it's hard to find a good swimming spot in the area), and a spa specializing in couples' treatments. In the attached article entitled, "Anything Goes," about the increasing "shamelessness" of luxury hotel guest requests, W Magazine claims this resort "brags that its butlers will custom program iPods for guests to enjoy while lounging poolside."

See it !
A cool, luxe-for-less option for Cabo, picked by Elle as a "Secret Address" in September 2005 (just prior to when we started to read back issues). However, our friends recently had great things to say about the hotel's facilities, its location and its restaurant. 22 stylish, oceanfront rooms with air conditioning, telephones, satellite TV and WiFi.  Good spot for surfing. Rooms from $275.
+ W MAGAZINE
W says, "Las Ventanas has the hushed feel of a billionaire's private villa." 71 suites clustered along an "endless beach" (not good for swimming, however) with serene views. Each of the three 4,000-sq foot spa suites comes with two bedrooms, a full kitchen (who's cooking?), multiple terraces, private spas with a "spa butler." Oh my!  W raves about the restaurant and its attention to detail -- it'll arrange a dinner on the beach. Luscious tropical fruit in the rooms, as opposed to the standard apples and bananas at other resorts.
