Rocco Forte's hotel in Berlin, located in Mitte. Wallpaper describes Hotel de Rome as "a contemporary fusion of 'Berlin Style' glass and steel housed in a bank building dating back to 1889." Swanky, expensive. "To enjoy the best food and accommodation [in Berlin], head to the district of Mitte around the boulevard Unter den Linden," advises the FT's How to spend it in its October 2009 feature article on Berlin.

Next to the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, Hotel Adlon was bombed in the war and only restored to its former glory in 1997. This is the hotel where Michael Jackson infamously dangled his son out of a window. Predictable luxury, but very nice and modern.

Not hip, but a good spot to sample authentic Berlin comfort food, advises Nicholas Lander for the FT about Kurpfalz-Weinstuben, a 75-year old restaurant in the west of the city under the direction of Rainer Schulz. "A Berliner described Schulz’s fare as 'the kind of food every German child grows up with, but it’s rarely as well cooked as this'. The restaurant is a magnet for Germans, lured by its comfort food, such as the ham it imports from south Tyrol, the venison brawn and sausage, home-made sauerkraut, and its excellent rendition of the haggis-like saumagen." The FT writes, "Ma, which offers Chinese-tinted European cuisine, is the upmarket eatery in [Tim] Raue’s new steel-and-mirror complex – the more laid-back Uma, next door, features lighter and faster Japanese-inspired cooking. The first good news is that service is a few hefty notches above the standard Berlin level. The FT's dinner for 2 including multiple wines -- 375 Euro. Read more in the attached FT review.
