Where to stay - BARCELONA
+ TATLER, ELLE DECOR, WALLPAPER
Lots of buzz about this hot new boutique hotel in Barcelona. "Throughout the 98-room hotel... luxury abounds in the rooms, with oversized Bisazza and Muntina glass-tiled showers, oak floors and cosy rugs. Carme Ruscelleda, a five-starred chef known for Catalan cuisines, directs proceedings at Moments restaurant." [Wallpaper] In April 2010, Elle Decor featured the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona in its What's hot! news column.  in the same month, Tatler remarks, "the Mandarin Oriental... brings a lovely slice of grown-up glamour to Passeig de Gracia."

"Situated just a hop, skip and jump from Plaça Catalunya, and within easy reach of the city’s Gothic and El Born quarters, Hotel Pulitzer in Barcelona is a design-conscious delight. From the ornate front desk – made from gilt-edged panels taken from a Sicilian church – through to the Asian-inspired themes in the communal areas, and even the simply framed artworks in all the rooms, a laid-back, arty feel pervades throughout." [Mr and Mrs Smith]

Good boutique hotel for foodies visiting Barcelona. "The only thing that can improve a two Michelin-starred restaurant in Barcelona is not having to go home after dining. At Xavier Pellicer’ ABaC Restaurant & Hotel you don’t have to – head straight from sampling seven-course-tasting menu to your white and gleaming bedroom, or down to the equally pristine subterranean spa."  [Mr and Mrs Smith]

Great find by the New York Times.  "Budget hotels [in Barcelona] don’t get more stylish than the Market Hotel. It’s hard to find — tell the cab driver it is an alley off of Carrer del Comte d’Urgell, and about a block from the Sant Antoni Market — but when you do, you’ll be amazed that rates at this impeccably designed, extremely comfortable hotel start at around 60 euros.   Click here to read the April 2009 NY Times article, 36 hours in Barcelona.

Bazaar's "luxe for less" hotel pick for Barcelona. "Downtown, Casanova Hotel has everything you'd expect in this well-dressed, fun and artistic city. It's hip, but not self-consciously so.... Public spaces are sleek, with glass and stone, and rooms are Miro-esque."  [Bazaar]   Good value.

A good choice for travellers seeking the ultimate urban experience in Barcelona.  Grand Hotel Central is an old-world hotel given a seriously hip makeover. The rooms are spare -- Japanese style spaces equipped with electronic gadgets galore (which could be somewhat of a pain). In the summer months, the rooftop pool is where all the action is. Check it out on the web site.

Unpretentious, inexpensive bar-restaurant serving excellent Catalan food, owned by Albert Adrià, brother of Ferran of El Bulli fame (considered to be the best resto in Spain). The FT writes, "We savoured the pinchos, or skewers, a house speciality, of extremely tender lamb in this case; deep-fried anchovies; prawns, quickly sautéed in lip-smacking sea salt; and two long white plates filled with squares of pink tuna, the quality of the fish accentuated by a sauce of tomato, spicy pepper and vinegar that gently warmed the top of the mouth."  Good value.  For more inexpensive, Catalan restaurants in Barcelona, read the attached FT article.
