Good side-trip from Bangkok, two hours away by car. "At the foothills of the UNESCO-protected Khao Yai National Park within a two-hour drive of Bangkok, Muthi Maya's ochre-hued private pool villas look out over majestic mountains and forests. Play a round of golf, hit the spa or embark upon a jungle adventure – the ideal escape from the capital's manic buzz." [Mr and Mrs Smith]
+ FINANCIAL TIMES, OUR FRIENDS
Top-notch boutique hotel in Bangkok.  Stylish, old-world charm in a colonial mansion featuring 12 suites and excellent food. Good side trip from Bangkok, golf resort two hours away. " Kirimaya Golf Resort Spa is as close as it gets to a luxury safari in Asia. Exuding warm, understated good taste, this sublime hotel combines modern sophistication with an all-natural escape. Rustic trimmings such as antique doors and wooden decking give way to simply furnished rooms showing off the best of contemporary Thai design." [Mr and Mrs Smith]

"Although it can feel a little like a nightclub on entry, once you venture past the cast-iron door and low-lit lobby at Tenface you'll discover an imaginative, enjoyable place to stay. Taking its name from the 10-faced, savvy, all-seeing giant Tosakan, from the epic Ramakien story, this is a sleekly styled hotel [in Bangkok] that still allows you to relax and be yourself. " [Mr and Mrs Smith]

"Unassuming, masculine and clubby, Ma Du Zi Hotel [in Bangkok] is a sublime mix of Chinese, Moorish and modern design and a suitably sexy place to sip cocktails..." [Mr and Mrs Smith]
+ OUR FRIENDS
"No pool, no gym, no restaurant, no lobby swarming with guests – Luxx is the perfect boutique alternative to Bangkok’s standard brand of chain-hotel monoliths. Hidden from all but the most discerning traveller, this luxury city-centre hideaway is the perfect point for exploring the city, all wrapped up in a swish contemporary coating of glass and black steel."  [Mr and Mrs Smith]  Good value, rooms under $100.

The Mandarin Oriental is a venerable, luxury hotel in Bangkok, selected in Elle by "Suttirat Anne Larlarb—Slumdog Millionaire’s acclaimed Thai-American costume designer—[who] spent every summer in Bangkok communing with her foodie Buddhist grandma... There, Larlarb feels 'welcomed in the deepest sense, without that studied, ingratiating niceness of most luxury hotels'—and at nearly half the price of its New York counterpart." + TOWN AND COUNTRY, OUR FRIENDS, FINANCIAL TIMES, DAILYCANDY
The boutique choice in Bangkok, or a good option for a long airport layover.  Sister to the ultra-hip London property, with its Mies van der Rohe-style facade and black Yohji Yamamoto uniformed staff, it seems to be the epitome of modernism. In October 2008, Town & Country announced the launch of the hotel's long layover special for $200, Touchdown at the Met," which includes limousine transfers from the airport, a Como Shambhala oil masssage, and a 3 course meal at the hotel's restaurant.
