Where to stay - BAHAMAS
+ OUR FRIENDS
"The Landing is a gracious, historic property dating back to 1800. Located on Harbour Island, which lies a short distance off the northeast coast of Eleuthera, this boutique hotel overlooks the harbor in the heart of Dunmore Town, an easy five minute stroll to the powder fine, pink sand beach."  [Kiwi Collection]

"Formerly a private estate, the One&Only Ocean Club, is a luxury beach resort [on Paradise Island] that offers long, white sandy beaches, tempting gardens, and a golf course as scenic as it is challenging."  [Kiwi Collection]

New resort in the Exumas comprising six villas on a beautiful unspoilt, 50-acre "paparazzi-free zone surrounded by dreamy shallow waters in every shade of blue." Each villa at Fowl Cay comes with its own golf cart, private beach, jetty or motor boat. "Children really love it." Laid-back [chill] vibe. Activities include tennis, diving [Thunderball Cave from the Bond flick is nearby], sailing, exploring deserted beaches and hanging out at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club (see our post). In its February 2009 review, Tatler sums up Fowl Cay, "Everybody's friendly and nobody cares who you are of what you wear, so relaxation is the only option." Weekly rates from $10,000, all inclusive.

For the ultimate beach holiday splurge or for a blow-out party, consider renting Little Whale Cay, a private island in the Bahamas consisting of three well-appointed villas.   [Financial Times, How to spend it, October 2008]   Five nights, 12 guests (7 bedrooms), staff, food, drinks -- $45,000.

If you want to "hang out with the locals" in the Bahamas and escape the tourist action, this is your place, says Vanity Fair. On a remote, two-square mile island in the Exumas, the bar and the restaurant of the Staniel Cay Yacht Cub comprise the center of the social scene there. "The catch of the day is really the catch of the day," the magazine comments about the "real down-home" cuisine served.  "Quaint" oceanfront [beach] cottages are available, starting at $162 a day. Activities include snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving, sailboat racing, kayaking and swimming with the sharks. (The Bond film Thunderball was filmed at Thunderball Cave, a natural fishbowl on the island.)

Charming "boutique" B&B by a French design team, close to Lyford and the Old Fort in Nassau.  Not on the water, but its setting is spectacular, perched high on a rock formation with panoramic views of the ocean. Well-designed rooms with wrap-around porches, featuring coffee-colored "rough" concrete walls and highly polished wide-board floors. Great getaway place to chill out for a few days, just 5 minutes (and a world away) from the airport. Good value.

The boutique addition of the mammoth family theme park by Sol Kerzner. Well, one thing you can say, it sure did generate some press with boldface social and Hollywood names. Town and Country ran a multi-page article about it and Tatler covered the opening party in its Bystander column. Vanity Fair mentioned the Cove's association with trendsetter Eva Jeanbart-Lorenzotti.
+ BRITISH HARPERS BAZAAR
Newly renovated resort perched on a bluff, overlooking a beautiful stretch of beach. In Bazaar, Allegra Hicks mentioned that the Coral Sand's  bar is "very atmospheric."
