"This is not so much a hotel as a serious health retreat," boasts Felix Milns about Parkhotel Igls in the attached FT review of Austria's leading spa hotels.   Located in the Tyrol region, the hotel recently underwent a major renovation, yielding a look of "understated elegance with an elemental feel."   Learn more about Parkhotel Igls and its extensive health regimes (weekly programmes to relieve stress, etc) in the attached How to Spend It review.

Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia, on Austria’s southern flank, is a long-time favourite summer destination of Austria's rich. "Miralago is among the loveliest surviving examples of the resort architecture favoured by the turn-of-the-century Austrian elite, who built their summer homes on Wörthersee after the Südbahn railway linked the region to Vienna." "It’s not the place for those who prize the sophistication of a hotel’s plumbing or the cool hum of its air conditioning, but lovers of the fin de siècle and the grand gesture will be seduced: the house is a protected historic monument, and the owners organise gourmet excursions by boat to Schlossstern, a Michelin two-starred restaurant across the lake, or – more decadent still – by aircraft to the fashionable Hangar 7 in Salzburg."   Good value, rooms from 100 Euro.   [FT]  Read more in the attached FT article, An Italian Lake in Southern Austria.
+ FINANCIAL TIMES, TOWN AND COUNTRY
Town & Country announced the opening of this plush Capella hotel on the Austrian Riviera.  Located in a restored, 17th century castle in the lakeside resort town of Velden, in the Carinthian foothills of the Alps. 100 rooms, slickly coiffed with chocolate-brown carpets and muted, golden-leather furnishings. Amenities at Schloss Velden include a Michelin-starred restaurant and a glamorous pool overlooking Lake Woerth. Doubles  from $800, suites from $1,500.   Get insider tips for touring the area in the attached FT article.
+ TATLER
In its March 2009 article Where's the party?, Tatler gossips, "The current chairlift banter is that there is only one place to take your children skiing in the Alps -- the "terribly small" Austrian sister resorts of Zurs and Lech. A longtime favorite of European royals (Di was a regular), the scene is chic yet less glitzy than St. Moritz and Gstaad and is more about the Tannbergerhoff disco, DJ Rudy and hanging out in "silly-pretty" hotels. "The smartest of them is the Gasthof," according to Tatler. Other top hotels in Zurs and Lech include the Arlberghaus (Yeti club for tots) and the Lorunser (Princess Caroline's fav).

Harper's Bazaar says the 650 year-old Arlberg Hospiz is the best ski hotel in the world. Located in the heart of the ski area shared by St. Anton, Lech and Zurs, the hotel is a self-contained holiday designation, well suited for families. "The children's club will take care of your little monsters until 9 pm." Always, lots of snow during season.  [Harper's Bazaar, 2009 Travel Guide]

Sölden is Austria's "Play hard, party hard" resort, says the FT in the attached article, adding,  "But if it is good skiing you’re after, this is the place to come.... Across the stream from the Gaislachkogl base [ski] station in Sölden is the superb four-star Castello Falkner. It is family friendly and houses an excellent spa.  With only 50 rooms, it provides a refuge from raucous revellers."  [FT] Good value, rooms from 96 Euro.  Catch up on skiing in the Tyrol in the attached FT article.
